Our roadtrip around France led us to a stopover in Lyon for about two days. Visiting Lyon during this time of the year was probably a disadvantage to us as the city was literally emptied out of locals who head elsewhere for their summer holidays. Apart from the touristy areas such as Vieux and Fourviere Hill, the rest of the city was quiet and most shops were closed, much to our disappointment. We had several recommendations for restaurants that we were quite keen to try seeing as Lyon is the gastronomic capital of France, but all the popular restaurants were closed for the month.
Lyon did have its charming parts in particular the traboules (passageways) that led into the courtyards of old residential buildings. These traboules are a city heritage and have been well preserved, and are worth exploring if you take the time to notice their discreet entryways.
Maybe next time we’ll have much better luck in Lyon!
